ORANGE GRAND LODGE.
THE AMALGAMATED BODY.
(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 20. The first meeting of the United Orange Grand Lodge of New Zealand was opened this morning. The following officers were elected and installed: — R.W. Grand Master, Bro. J. Middleton ; Deputy G.M., Bro. J. Aston; Foreman of Committee, Bro. R. Meredith ; Grand Chaplain, Bro. Major Cumming (Salvation Army) ; Grand Secretary, Bro. E. N. Budden ; Grand Deacons, Bros. J. Barlow and Caygill ; Inner Guard, Bro. Martine; Tyler, Bro. King. It was resolved that representation as agreed to by particular lodges should be the same as before amalgamation. The constitution agreed upon provides amongst other things that : Setting aside party politics, the Orange Institution shall only support the return to Parliament and all other public bodies men of sound and well-known Protestant principles; that no candidate shall be admitted under 18 years of age; that no person who at any time has been a Roman Catholic or is married to one shall be admitted into the institution, except upon testimonials of good charaoter and satisfactory evidence produced showing that he and his wife have been recognised members
of some Protestant Church for at least fivo years, and by the unanimous vote of Grand Lodge, and a certificate of his having been unanimously elected by ballot m the lodge m which he is proposed being sent to the Grand Lodge, and any member marrying a Roman Catholic shall ba expelled ; that private lodges may elect members who have served 25 years continuously or m recognition of past services as life members, with all privileges of membership, providing such lodge pays the yearly capitation tax for such mem" l bers as ordered by fche Grand Lodge and subject to the rules of the institution. It was agreed that uniform regalia be obtained m future, this not to be retrospective, and to operate only m regard to new members. The next Grand Lodge meeting will be held at Dunedin.
