An idea of the difficulties that have to be faced by men who go into the back-blocks 1 for mining purposes may be gathered from tho following extract from the report of the manager of the Kapowai Company:—"We were just getting over the effects of the fire, and now the country is flooded. A 6ft kauri log disputed my light to the house I was living in. The other day the bushmen let go their dam, and there was 3ft of water in my house. A lar^e log burst in the door, and smashed the chimney. I have now lemo\cd the house to a safer place."
