THE POLICE FORCE.
SEQUEL TO AN INQUIRY. WELLINGTON, March 9. As tho result of a departmental inquiry j recently held at Gisborne by Sub-inspertor Dwyer, of Christchurch, into the conduc* of certain police officials in that town, a constable has been dismissed from tho force and a detective reduced to the 'rank of constable and transferred to Dunedin. Following upon those changes, the following transfers have been made: — Sergeant Williams, of Gisborne, goes to Auckland 1 , and will be replaced by Serjeant Heaton, .of Wellington ; Sergeant Murphy, of Auckland, goes to Wellington ;*' Constable Tate, of Gifiborne, is transferee! to Wellington; and Constable Stewart, of Wellington, ia promoted to be sergeant here. Sergeant Heaton, from Mount Cook, is to be the new officer in charge of the Gisborne district. GISBORNE, March 9. A constable, who was recently convicted of assault' at Waerenga-e-hika, is to be relieved, and Detective Maddern is to be transferred to Dunedin. Constable Dandy, who has been stationed in Dunedin for the past 18 months, hatbeen transferred to Gifborne.
