KAURI GUM PRODUCTION.
- AUCKLAND, December 3£. The production ot kauri gum is a grad*- , ally decreasing quantity, and for the yeai just closing the production is 700 tons less,than that for the preceding year. The total production for the month of December was 439 tons, this being the smallest total on record for any one month during the past 11 years, when in September, 1896, the total was 424 tons. To get figures~aa low as these in December it is necessary, to go back as far as 1885, when the amount' was 106 tone. The total production for the year was 7877 tons. Last j(ear it was 8602 tons, the decrease this year thus being 725 tons. Adding to this the loss of the gum which was included in the cargo of the wrftcked barque Viking, 653 tons,, al shortage of 1378 tons as compared with the previous year is disclosed. The total exports for the year were 8287 tons, against' in 1906, a decrease, for the current year of 412 tons. The shipments to Europe, inoluding the -United Kingdom, are over 1000 tons less than last year'e, while shipments to America are about the same as the preceding -year if the Viking's shipment is deducted. Prices have ruled high.' 'during the period under consideration, and under these circumstances it. is usual to find large quantities coming to hand at Christmas time, but this month proved an exception tolthe. general- rule. ' '
