Tobacco Smoke and Germs.
We (Science Sittings) drew attention, .recently to the statement of Dr.J. (L'MrWilter that tobacco fumes may haye an effect on the 'breathing passages, making them ai less suitable soil for the consumption germ. The following- experiment would seem to> prope this : —Smoke from a cigar was blown across a slip of linen winch had been dipped in a fluid containing thousands-' of virulenfe' perms. When the cigar was finished 'ihe linen was immediately, placed in $ bowl of beef, broth, where common mieroiies ara expecteji to multiply, with' astounding- xapiditv. Ir. was found that the smoke tad! had the effect of delaying _ihe_ growth of the : organisms'/ that 'the msiority of "them we're dead.- and that those which lived never fully developed. '
