TIWKirOTO AND KAITANGATA LAKES.
Lake Tuakitoto, at Lo\ ell's Flat, a few mill"? .--outh of Waihola. i« a favourite-rc-ort of water-fowl at all times, and sometimos tho face of thif largo, shallow sheet
of water is literally black with swans, grey ducks, and teal. A favourite haunt is in the vicinity of the mouth of Lovell's Creek. Pukeko are numerous in the swamps surrounding the lake, and these birds, as well as the birds on the water, ■are not disturbed by the whistling or running of a frequent train service alongside the western boundary of the lake. The white crane, or heron, used to nest and breed on the shores of this lake, and -some few years ago a colony of from 15 to 20 of the<=e beautiful birds were in the habit of nesting here every year. There Are a- few wild geese on the lake. Adjoining Tuakitoto there is another lake similar in appearance and known as Kai tangata Lake. Here also swans, ducks. "teal, pukaki. etc.. are numerous. Ihe method of shooting adopted on these lakes is that of the "'mi-mi" or "plant"' system. The shooter erects a small covering of rushes, flax, scrub, or similar growth. and places this either in the water or on the lake side, carefully concealing him self, and shooting from behind or from within the covering.
