NOTES AND CRITICISMS.

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP.

Mr J. A. Boreham writes as follows on December 16:— "The Draughts World* editor queries about Problems 1494 and 66T. in theTTovember number of the World, to which I have pleasure in replying as follows. No. 1494, correcting No. 883 in Gould's Book. was published by me many years ago in tha Oamaru Mail. Even then 1 was behind kh« times, as Mr J. Stark got in the cdrrectioni before the publication of Gould's Book ol Problems (See Problem 762 in that work* " although the note to 762 is misleading, an it is said to correct 881, which should readl 883). Anyhow, I resign my claim, which antedates Mr J. H. Collins's by some 13 years* to Mr Stark, and I think on reference toj 762,. G.P.8., Mr Collins will do likewise^ No. 667 in the World is a combination of ideas— one by yours truly, which took firs* prize in a problem competition'^ the otneq idea embodied, in the problem has. also been published, f and I think by an Austrahaw author, although I cannot place it just now. Both the above-mentioned problems hay« appeared in the Otago Witness."

Play in this tournament as regards the championship was concluded on Saturday), evening last, when the final between Messrs Boreham and Brodie was decided. Four in- ( teresting game* settled the question, Bore^ ham winning two, and two being drawn;. The fourth game, however, was virtually a draw ; but that was no use to Brodie, he havina lost one, so, in a position which was a simple draw, he played a loss on the off chance of his opponent not making the correct nvly: in which case Brodie would have won. Bu» Boreham made no mistake, and sacured Jm title for the third time in succession. Tha 1 games of this round will probably appear next* week. The second section of the tourne* is not quite completed, and the holidays wilt postpone the end.
