FINE SCORE BY THE NORTHERN TEAM. OHRISTCHURCH, December 14. Ideal conditions prevailed to-day, when •the first match for possession of the Plunket jßhield was commenced 'between Canterbury and Auckland. The opposing teams were 8s follow:— Cahtikbtot. — A. Canterbury won the toss, and the innings ! *was opened by Luck and Patrick to the bowling of Rejf and Howden. The half cen- I Story went up after &0 minutes' play, and Lusk reached 40 with a beautiful cut to the ropes, 'j Tbe same bataman kept busy, getting some splendid -on pulls, and at 69 Haddos bowled ■in place of Kerr. Lusk reached 50 in an hour, and Relf bowled again at the south end. Grand fielding by Prime, who was doing splendid work in the country, saved a boundary. Singles gave Patrick 20, and the same batsman «ent 90 up with a grand out for four. With only -a single added Relf got the Sydeiiiam man lbw. ti» board showing 93-1-26. Reese was next, and Kerr replaced Haddon. The luncheon adjournment then took place. Oii resuming at 2.15 'Belf from the south end opened to Lusk, and the latter was caught at the wicket first ball. 94-2-66. Anthony joined his ■kipper, and opened with a nice off-drive for three. Howden was the other .trundler, tad Reese started with a single and then drove him magnificently for foui, sending 100 up for an nour and a-half s play. Anthony got a like stroke to the ropes, but in -the same pver player late .at Howden, and was bowled. 107-3-7. Whitta followed, and Reese drove Howden three times in fUoeeteion. "Whitta" opened with an Qp-drive on Relf, four being run. Kerr relieved Howden, and slow play followed. In Kerr's next over Reese made a wild lunge, 4bd the ball going off the edge of his bat Relf brought off a fine catch in the slips. i^3&— 4— 26. Orchard followed. Whitta got another single, and then lifted Relf high to long-on, where Huesey brought off a good fitrtoh. 136—5—6. Cuff filled the gap, and ftfiO went up after two and a-quarter hours' |>lay. Howden replaced Kerr, and Hadlion relieved Relf. Orchard got under •he first ball and lifted it to forward cover, Woev» Brook-Smith made an easy catch. 161—0—19. Boxshall was the ingoer, and opened his account with an off drive, but In Haddon's next over Cuff was out lbw. 170—7—6. Bennett joined Boxshall, who ■ftfit one up to the bowler. 182—8—16. Crauthew relieved Maione al 56, and at 76 Reese took the 541 froni Bennett, but the score still mounted steadily. Brook-Smith reached 60 witt a fine off drive, 90 going up with J&A stroke. caught at the wickets. 100 — 1—53.1 — 53. Mason was next, and Bennett bawled again in the place of Crawshaw. In Bennett's first over Mason was magnificently caught in the sKps by Anthony. 107—2—2. Cumminge followed. At 131 Reeee bowled again in Malone's place, and Crawshaw relived Bennett. Cummings and Hemus cut each sweetly for 4, sending 150 up for an hour and three-quarter's play. Lusk relieved his akipper at 158, and Camminga drove Crawshaw grandly. for a quartet. Patrick took the bail, and Orchard the last over, the score standing at 170 for two wickets when time was called. December 16The Plunket Shield match Canterbury v. Auckland was continued to-day, when_ the Aucklanders resumed their first innings, Hemus, with 63, and Cummings, with 31, being the not oute. The latter faced Bennett,' and from the fourth ball he was smartly taken at the wicket* — 170 — 3—3 — 31. Relf'is appearance was greeted with applause,' and he started with a late cut off Malone for 3. Crawshaw distinguished himself by a beautiful bit of fielding, and Reeee did likewise, but marred it by a wild return, which added 2 for overthrows. Malone beat each batsman badly and then Hemue got him pretily to Jeg for. 4. Relf next banged a short one from the slow bowler to the square leg boundary. Hemus treated a lull toes in the same way, sending the second century up amid applause. A couple of fine drives to Belf and a smart leg cut to his partner were chiefly responsible for -sending 220 on the board, and Crawshaw replaced Malone. The first ball, a full toss, Hemue hit hard into Cuff's hands at point, but the catch -was dropped. After a period of slow play Belf hit Crawehaw grandly for 4, and splen.did fielding by the High Soheol boy saved a certain boundary. Reese bowled in place Crawshaw, two lours coming from the first over. Hemus reached his century with a single, and loud applause greeted him. Two hundred and fifty went up immediately after, for 2 hours and 40 j minutes' play. Hemus cut Bennett twice in one over for 4 each, both grand strokes, j and Cuff took a turn in Reese's place, Malone bowling at the other end. A couple of fours to the professional and a drive to his partner sent 270 on the board. Lusk replaced Cuff, and Patrick had a tarn at the south end, but runs still came speedily, and Relf, with a 3 to leg, sent the third century up for 3 hours and 40 minutes' play. Bennett bowled again, but, though trundling splendidly, had no luck, for each ,bateman was missed off him at the wiokete, and Relf gave Anthony a difficult chance at extra slip. Crawshaw had another turn, and with the score at 312 the players adjourned for lunch. On resuming, Malone and Bennet bowled. In Malone's second over Hemue drove him grandly for 4, and was then missed in the slips by Lusk. After alow play Hemue drove Malone grandly to the fence. Relf also got him to the boundary with a gallery hit, but Hemus was caught at the wicket — 347 — 4—148.4 — 148. Haddon. followed,., and opened with a pretty .4. tft. leg, sending 350 up for four and a-half hours' play. The Auckland skipper got four more boundaries in quick order, ..and. 37ft was hoistea. Lusk replaced Malone. A grand off drive to Relf sent 400 up, the t>lay having lasted just on five "hours. fn the next over Haddon hit one into Cuff's hands at pomt — 402—5—36. Prime was next, and drove Reese along the ground for 4 and gotLusk to leg fo ra like number. Anthony replaced Reese at 414, Crawshaw bowling at the othcV: end. Relf put one up at mid-on, but Malone failed to start in time. Bennett went on again, and Relf should have been run out, Prime refusing his calK for a single. Bennett, however, failed to take the ball, and the batsman got back. He showed his gratitude by hitting Orawshaw twice to the leg boundary. He then drove Bennett beautifully Tor another 4. Malone had another turn, but with no more success, for Relf made himself topsoorer by hitting four 4'« off one over. This was his last, however, for in Bennett's next over he hit one almost straight up, and Reese mad* an easy catch. 471—6—57. Huesey was the ingoer, and after driving Bennett for 4 he gave Orchard a hard chance at mid-off. Hussey the^n ran Prime out badly, calling him for an impossible •ingle and Reese getting the ball inemartly. 488—7—17. Howden filled the gap, and opened play with a lucky pair to leg. After hitting reeso for 4 he should have been stumped. The fiftJP century went up amid applause, but Howden was then well taken at the wickets. 500—8—9. - After the tea adjournment Robinson' partnered Hussey, Bennett and Reese bowling. Each batsman hit Bennett . for 4, and the runs came fast, 520 .going up. Crawshaw relieved Bennett, and Robinson gave a chapce of stumping, but it made no difference, for he was clean bowled next ball. 528—9—17. Kerr, the Jast man; opened with a big lift < to the square leg boundary, but In Craw- ! shaw*s next over Hussey lifted him into the long Held, where Patrick correctly judged the catch, and the innings closed at 4.55 for 539. ' After a short interval the Aucklanders took the field again, and Lusk and Patrick started Canterbury's second innings at 5.10. Relf opened to the former from the north end, and Patrick got him prettily through the slips for 4. Singles sent 10 up and Lusk sent 20. up with an on-drive to the fence. Patrick drove Haddon to the off ropes for a like number. In the same over, however, he was caught at the wicket. 26 — I—lo.1 — 10. Reese joined Lusk, and got Relf prettily to the" leg ropes. Lusk hit him to the on-boundary for a like number, and 40 was hoisted. The left-hander got Relf through the «=lips with a speculative stroke, which went to the line, and then cut Haddon .grandly for another 4. The Tialf -century went up for 40 minutes' play, and Ken replaced Relf. At 68 Haddon gave way to Hu«eey. In Kerr's next over Reese lifted one olean over the fence for 6, but gave a chance to the wicket-keeper in the next over, which was dropped. At 76 Howden replaced Kerr, and Reeee sent hie -first two balls to the leg-boundary with oliuking strokes. Relf had a turn at the south end, and ho got Reeee lbw with his second ball.
