SETTLERS' GRIRVANCES.
OAMARU, December 11. The settlers on Steward Settlement met to-day for the further c©neid»ration of matters connected with the water-race, on which they paid intere«t for 18 mdntfas before the water was available to them, or, it is understood, before any money was paid by the Government fc* work on the race. The Hon. T. *x% Duncan and Mr J. A. Macpherson, M.P.'«, were present, and after a good deal of dwcuseion it was agreed that thesa gentttemen should approaoh the Hon. R. M"Nab and remind him of the settlers' petition, «o far unanswered, and should tepreeent to him the justice of the claim for the rebate. The discussion showed that the contractor for the small distributing racM had discontinued work and had left the locality, and the settlors are now anxious to know whether the Government will complete the distribution of the water or not. It was agreed to take no further steps for the J formation of ft local board of control until it is known what is io bo done on that other matter.
