DESERTING. FROM WARSHIP.
AUCKLAND, December 12. When the *erry steamer Albatross was some distance up the harbour about 9 o'clock Jast sight' a cry was heard from the •water A. search resulted in the Jkcov«rj of a roan .named Simpson, a stoke* oa, H.M.S. Pegasus, floating, Teith the assistance of a piece of wood about 2ft long. Simpson, who was much exhausted, stated that he fell overboard from the warshijr, and " had been in the water over an hour. Though a strong swimmer, he ir&e unable to make headway against tho tide. It Mould appear that Simpson and an* other man were prisoners on the Pegasus, which was holding them until the arrival of the Challenger, from which they had d<?sorted. The other man is supposed to have escaped ashore in the Raicanoa while 6h« was engaged coaling the warshio and th« opinion held concerning Simr^n's immersion is that ho was making an effort to obtain the same result by swimming, and was nearly drowned in tha attempt.
