SOUTHLAND A. & P. SHOW

(From Otjb Owk CorbSspondent.) -~ INVERCARGILL, December 10. The Southland metropolitan summer 6how was opened in Queen's Park to-day under favourable conditions. In the morning the weather was bright and clear, the indications being in favour of a warm day ; but dnn'ng the afternoon there were a few light showers, which had a cooling effect upon the atmosphere, and yet were not too heavy to be unpleasant for the spectators. To-day's programme consisted solely or judging the cattle and sheep, -and the attendance consisted chiefly of exhibitors ; but to-morrow the horses will be judged, and several attractive competitions will take place, -and * large attendance is expected. A large number of country folk are in town. .-Mid the boarding-house accommodation is severely taxed, a few visitors having to be up at private houses, and it is reported that others had to sit up all night. In point of entries the 1907 6how is a record for the Southland A. and P. Association, a comparison of the catalogues showing an increase of 43 on last year's figures, as detailed in the following table: — 1906. m 7. Sheep 207 297 Sheep dogs 19 H - Cattle 1W H7 Horses 23* 252 Pigs .. .- , "■ .. 26 27 Dairy produce 47 56 . A pfeasing feature of this year's show is "the number of prominent breeders from Canterbury and elsewhere who are exhibiting'here for the first time, showing that the Southland summer show is -^cognised as being one of the most important gatherings in the Dominion. As to the sections which ■were judged to«day, sheep were well represented, the entries numbering 207, xvbioh is an increase of 90 on last year. In Border Leicesters, Mr IX L. Barnhill, of Oafitlerock, was the principal prize-taker, securing the championship with hi* fourtooth ram, and also winning the special prize for best ram, most points in Border teioesfcera, and most points in sheep. The English Loieegt3rs were a good display, and most of the honours went to Mr "W. >T. Johnston, of Gore. The last show, however, was undoubtedly in Romney Marsh sheep, which were the centre of attraction. The honours were divided between Messrs Bealey Bros., of Hororata, Canterbury, and Mr James Holms Waimahaka, the former winning both championship shields presented by the New Zealand Romney Marsh Sheen-breeders' Association. For the champion ram end ewe • in Lincoln, Mr J. B. Sutton, of Thornbury, was again to the fore with sheep of the usual hi«h standard. He and Mr George Sutton, of Winton, were the only exhibitors. Amon* the Shropshires Mr J. S. Grieve, of Wallacetown, was the principal prise-taker with some sheep of sp.en- . did quality. Hir prize ram— £tar Rose, by the- Tasmanian sire Wild Rose — secured the champion certificate. .There were no Southdowns nor-Hampshires forward. Mr T. L. Barnhill was the sole exhibitor of Cheviot!*; which were of splendid quality. Corriedales made their first appearance, and were one of the centres of attraction. Mr , John Stringfellow, .of Chertsey r was the principal prize-taker. Crossbreds were somewhat weak- in point of -numbers, but fat sheep #rore well represented. Of the cattle, the Aynhires were the best section, and the ohief-winner was Mr W. Rankin, of Underwood. Devons and polled Angus 'were not represented, but shorthorns were very satisfactory. In this plass Mr Wm. Waddell, of JVaikaka Valley, won the championship for best bull, and Mr H. Carswell for cow in milk. Crossbreds -and milkers were strongly represented, and Mr Thos. Scully* •was prominent as a prize-winner. Mr A. J. Keith, of Oamaru, secured the honours for fat stock. The sheep-dog trial brought to light some exceedingly well-trained collies. The first prize was awarded to Mr J. B. Purdue's Jack^ whose time was 7min 42sec. The fastest time was put up by Mr R. Anderson's Scot. -who took the sheep through in 4min 40sec, but unfortunately Mr Anderson went outside a post instead of following through 'after the sheep, and was disqualified.
