FIRES.
MARTON, December 4.
The second big fire within the last month broke out at Marton about 2 o'clock today, totally destroying J. M. Nicol's shop, refreshment rooms, and bakehouse, the premises of B. G. Gobel (fruiterer and produce merchant), J. Milligan (crockery and ironmongery), and Max Bornhold (jeweller's shop and dwelling). The water supply was cut off temporarily, and when the brigade got to work Nicol's building, where the fire started, was in a mass of flamee. The brigade worked splendidly and saved several adjoining buildings. The insurances are : — Nicol's 6tock, £250, in the Alliance; the shop, owned by Mrs Nicol, sen., £300, in the Liverpool and London and Globe; Goebel's stock, £50, in the New Zealand office; the shop, owned by A. H. Sutcliffe, £300, in the Liverpool and London and Globe ; Milligan's stock, £250, in the Commercial Union; the shop, owned by A. H. Sutcliffe, £500, in the Liverpool and London and Globe; Bornhold's stock and furniture, £530, in the State office; and the shop and d-syelling, £400, in the New Zealand office.
ASHBURTON, December 4. A new five-roomed house in Ham[#tearl. ■valued at £260, owned by Mrs Susannah Taeker and occupied by J Recklington, was completely deetrojed by fiie la k t night. Nothing was £a\ed. * The house
was insured for £163 in the State office and the furniture for £75 in the NorwicH Union office.
NAPIER, Deoember 4.
A nre broke out about 9.3Q this evening in the upstairs portion of the premises of J. M. Phillips, confectioner, Hastings street. The fire had a good hold when discovered, and Mjf Phillips's place was gutted, and of his furniture And stock very little was saved. Rice (confectioner), Prebble (fruiterer), and Hannah's (hoot importers) all had ih&iv stocks damaged by water; while the upper, portion of Rice's shop was also gutted. Phillips's furniture, stock, and shop fiittings, etc., were insured for £400 and his household furniture for £100, but his loe« will be about £700 over that amount. Mr Phillips and his family were away at an entertainment when the fire broke out Th% cause of the fire is unknown. >
NAPIER, December 5. The shop gutted by fire last night tree owned by Mr 6 Abbott and was insured for £300 in the Northern office. Rice's confectionery shop was owned by the School CommJssioers- and was insured for £100. in the Alliance Company.
