November 18.— The countryside is looking delightfully green and fresh now, there being more warmth in the ground, and occasionalshowerß like the one we are having this morning are causing the grass and crops to spring up rapidly. Dairying is quiokly Tecovering after the disastrous season of last year, and there is every appearance of a big flow of milk at ihe local dairy factory, the present intake being about 2300 gallons. Appointments.— ln last Thursday's Gaeette Messrs Magnus Jamieeon and James ifGarry were appointed trustees of the public cemetery in place of Messrs J. Bates (deceased) and M. M'Garry (resigned). The other trustees are:— Messrs- J. Steven (chairman). R. Pearson, W. M'Dougall, W. Hallum, and G. Maxwell. Social.— The Presbyterian Band of Hope picnic, which had been arranged to be held on the King'B Birthday holiday 1»^ JWfnday, had unfortunately to be postponed owing io th© damp morning, but a very successful: social was held in the Public Hall in the evening. There was a very large attendance of children, and aUo of adults, and all nre6ent — particularly the young folks — seemed in thoroughly enjoy themselves. Mr B. W. Feil' presided, and invited all to join in singing one verse of the National Anthem, an invitation that was heartily accepted. A gootl musical programme had been prepared' by, Mrs Kerr, and valuable assistance was givca by Messrs Guy and Robert*, of Dunedin. Somo very interesting tableaux were shown, including " Where are you going, my pretty maid?" " Bluebeard's wives," "Three old maids of Lea," and " Queen of the May and' her subjects." which were much appreciate?. A feature of the evening was a decoratetß bicycle and go-cart competition and proceßsion. and the appearance of the entries wai mosT creditable to the competitors, as well as being very pleasing to the onlookere. Messrs Guy and Roberts, the judges, awarded the prizes as follows: — Decorated bicyclse, Mrs B. W. Fell, 1; Mis« Ena Stewart. 2; Miss Amy Valentine. 3; Mie« Ethel Whetter, 4. Go-carts, Miss Bastings. 1. The prises were distributed by Mrs Kerr. and it . was announced by the chairman that a picnic would be held on the beach during the school holidays, and that the remaining prizes would, be held over until then. Refreshments wero "handed round, and the gathering came "to an end with the singing of "Auld lang sync." Death.— Mrs Betey Vanes, widow of the late Rev. Benjamin Vanes, died euddenlv early on the morning of Wednesday. 18th in»t. She had been suffering from influenza of late, and death was. caused by failure of the heart's action. It 4s a coincidence that her husband died suddenly in the same manner, at the same age (59). in October, 1902. Deceased had been a resident in Waikonaiti for about 30 years. She was -of a very retiring disposition, and wab much -respected, and) leaves a grown-up family of two sons *n<J three daughters. The funeral took place i« the public cemetery yesterday afternoon, the Rev. J. Featherston officiating, and a large number of residents being present v mourners. A memorial service is to be held in the Primitive Methodist Church next Sun t day evening. Racing Club.— The Waikouaiti Racing Club held their annual meeting in the Athenaunu on Satnrday night, Mr P. Byrne (president >] in the chair. A full muster was present, and four new members were elected. Thm balance sheet showed a credit balance oi £180. The following officers were appointed :J Mr A. S. Orbell, president; Meisrs H. Buckland, J. Iff&ill, G. Charlton. vice-presidents:! Mr Orbell, judjge; Mr Haxlett, starter; and Mr Gourley, handicapper. A strong committee was ako formed, with Mr R. Templet ton as secretary, *nd Mr J. Matheeon treasurer. It was decided to hold races on tha, 2nd January, with stakes amounting to Ull0 1 / divided over pix events (included in which ara two trots), and programmes will be issued immediately.
