RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION.
DISSATISFACTION IN NELSON.
NELSON, July 16.
A large public meeting, representative of the whole district, resolved last night to express strong disapproval of the dilatory manner in which the work of railway construction in this district is being carried on, and to call upon the Government to redeem its repeated pledges, and authorise during the present session the construction of another section of railway, go as to extend the line as far as the Buller River as expoditiously as can be, and thereby encourage settlement by avoiding loss of time and the heavy cost of carting over the Hope Mountain. It was further resolved — "That, whereas many persons were induced to take up land beyond the reach of the existing line to Tadmor by repeated proraises that the railway would he extended, and as there is more unoccupied land in Nelson province than in certain other parts of the colony already served, much of which would he taken up if accessible by an extension of the railway, it would be in the best interests of the colony as well as just to the people of Nelson province if the required extension were pushed on with vigour." It was resolved to send copies to the parliamentary representatives
of the district, and request them to wait on the Premier and his colleagues and use every means in their power to secure the authorisation o| the construction of the line. All local bodies in the district are to be asked to support the movement.
