THE PORT OF WESTPORT.
Mr Greenland, secretary to the Wcstport Harbour Board, telegraphed last week as follows: — "Very untruthful and misleading paragraph in j r our issue 10th inst. -regarding Westport. from your Greymouth correspondent. This port has not been blocked in any manner whatever, shipping going on continuously, although unfortunately Greymouth has been blocked considerably of late. Vessels leaving here for that port after waiting four or five days in the Greymouth roadstead, and unable to enter the port, have had to return here and discharge the Greymouth cargo. Pleaee correct the erroneous statement referred to by some irresponsible reporter, as our authentic harbour records here show it to be totally untrue." Our Greymouth cor wsnon dent, to whom we referred the communication, replies: — "Apparently the telegram to which 3lr Greenland takes exception is the following : 'All the harbour bars on the West Coast are abnormally low at present. It ie stated that the same conditions are existing in the North Island. Greymouth, Westport, and Hokitika harbour entrances are lower than they have been known to be for many years.' Such wae undoubtedly the case, as masters of vessels trading in and out of both Westport and Greymouth can testify. In the paragraph no mention was made of Westport Harbour being blocked, but the fact remains that it wes affected by the recent weather, which caused a block at Greymouth."
