SALE OF A THOROUGHBRED
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., I/td., have sold, on account of Mr J. O'Brien, of Oaznaru district, his thoroughbred stallion Rosemere, the purchaser being Mr Chris. Coombs, oj Drummood. Rosemere is a rich brown with black points, and stands well over 16 hands. He shows a lot of power and quality, and is one of the handsomest horses ever seen on the turf in recent years in this colony. His sire, Weatmere, was by the Musket horse Escutcheon, who -was out of Rosette, a half sister to Bend 1 Or, one of the most successful horses that England has produced. Bend Or sired Ormond, the horse of the century, whose grandson (Flying Fox) holds the world's record for a price paid for a thoroughbred — that of 37,500 guineas. Escutcheon's stock have during the past seven seasons won 231 races, valued at over 11.950. guineas. Escutcheon sired Veneda, who was sold to India at 1400-guineas. Westmere was out of Leonessa. Leonessa was out of Petroleusse, the dam of Hotchkiss, one of the most successful sires that has been used in the colony. Rosalind, the dam of Rosemere, was th* dam of a large number of good horses, including Black Rose and Rosene (both C.J.C. Derby winners), Awarua Rose (third N.Z. Cup), and Royal Rose (a good performer in Australia and New Zealand), whilst Star Roee (N.Z. Cup winner, 1906) and English Rose are both closely related to Rosemere. His granddam, Red* Rose, wsa got by Traducer, and produced, besides Westmere's dam, Mountain Lily (dam of Blazer, one of the fastest horses seen in the colony), La Rose, Red Ensign (the dam of Red Lancer and Red Banner), and others. Albany, 4he sire of Westmere's dam, was also the sire of Ouida (winner C.J.C, Welcome Stakes, C.J.C. Derby, and other races), Disowned (C.J.C. Derby and G.N. Derby winner). Nonsense, Ruby (record holder for seven furlongs), Forbury, Day Dream, and others. The price paid for Rosemere was »" very satisfactory one to the vendor, but the purchaser is to be congratulated on having eeeured one of the best horses in the thoroughbred class in the colony, and one that will prove a great acquisition to the Invercargill, Drummond, and surrounding districts. Rosemere has never been beaten in a show ring.
