Th6re is v«ry little doing in local sporting circles. Nominations for the- Wellington Steeplechase meeting close on Monday, and after that matters should begin to brighten up

Ihe annual meeting of the Racing Conference has been fixed for the Monday prior to the Wellington Steeplechase meeting. The meeting extends from Wednesday till "Wednesday. The usual race ball will be he'd, and on two nights boxing contests will take place. A stud card has been printed for Achilles, and will be is=ued early next week to owners of mares hkely to subscribe Owners are asked to make 30 subscriptions of 30gs each pnoi to Jure 30 If the response from owners does not satisfy the owner of the horse he will probably be kept in training.

This year the handicaps for the Winter Cup, Grand National Hurdles, and Grand Xat'onal Steeplechase will appear before the WeMington meeting is held. Winners at Trentham will have to carry penalties at Riccarton The Wellington Steeplechase winner will have to put up a Btone extra in the Winter Cup and Greud National Hurdle" Winners of the principal events at the local meeting will have to put up 10lb extra.

Your correspondent has not heard of any local horses being backed for the New Zealand Cup. The prohibitive prices offered by layers have prevented the early birds supporting their fancies The Otaki Maori Racing Club's winter meeting resulted in a substantial profit. It 16 hoped the club will shortly make a start to get the new course in order. Last week Frank Higgott, who ha? for some years trained at the old course, shifted to Tientham. where he has had a house and range of stabling built.
