During the past week we have been enjoying plenty of variety in the matter of tbe> weather, which has, in fact, been coming along in samples. Rain, sunshine, and frost •were topped off on Friday night with a heavy fa-11 of snow. Fortunately, so far as our tr»iners ar» concerned, rt was not severe at Riccarton, and training operations were, m consequence, not interfered with.

Wheel), which wae bred by Mr H. A. Knight, has joined H. Solomon's team. Hehos, who has been a source of somo anxiety to his trainei for some time, is to be blistered and spelled. A three-yeer-old filly by Benzoin — Lucy Glitters ia the 2atesfc addition to T. Cotton's string. A fil-y by Clanranald — Merry-go-round, by Gipsy Grand — Whirlpool, has just _ been broken in for Mr R. O. Campbell by J. Franks.
Last week Mr V. Harris held a clearing sale of trotting horses, sulkies, and gear, the property of Mr M. Edwards, who intends ta retire from trotting. The South Canterbury Hunt dub held its annual Point to Point races last Thursday on a course kid out in the Levels Valley. In the Heavy Weights Messr» EJworthy Bros. filled first and second places with Cradgmare and Brisk, Mr W. H. Crowe's Omrah Deing third In the Light "Weight* Mr F. P. E%ans'a Lucky Star won from Messrs Elworthy Bros.' Gnat and Dr C. E. Thomas's Brownhill. Mr A. S. Elworthy, the rider of Craigmore, won a trophy for being first past the post. On Friday next nominations are due for the principal events- to be decided at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting. There should be a fair number of local entries for the Winter Cup, and we also have a few candidates in work for the Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race. In all three cases, also, the substantial stakes offered will ensure a good response from owners in other parts of the colony. _Sa far as the jumping r»ces< «re concerned, in fact, we will, as usual, have to depend very largely on the North Island contingent to provide the fields. . D. Moraghan has received an important addition to his team in tbe shape of Phae-ton-tis. As the Phaeton gelding won the Grand National Steeplechase last year under the same mentorship, the move seems a good Corona, by Auranga — Diadem, is the latest addition to ML Hobbs's team. ldasa gave a poor display in a schoobng task during the week, but she was without a companion, which must have made a big difference. . , The Clanranald gelding Golden Cairn, who broke down at the Canterbury Jockey Club s autumn meeting, has been sent to his owner s station, where he will be spelled for a year. Chryseis, by Clanranald — Golden Crest, haa run her last race, and she was shipped during the week to the Stonyhurst stud to be mated in the spring with TreadmillStronghold, who has been showing signs ot lameness, has been on the easy list during the last few days. Ing-eneuk has be«n_put in active work again after a spell. The sister to Fireiron looks well after her respite.
