LAYING STRAINS AT THE GOVERNMENT POULTRY STATIONS.
In pursuance of the policy of building up at the Government poultry stations flocks of the best laying strains of the various utility breeds, Mr Brown, assistant poultry expert of the Department of Agriculture, visited Blenheim at the conclusion of the lading competition la^t month, and purchased a nuinbor of tho loading po»s, amongst thorn the two best pens of heavy breeds, which gained respectively sixth and seventh place. By thus securing proved lajers and the adopting of systematic trapnesting, the production of birds of highly developed laving qualities i 6 afsured. Poultry-breeders should therefore be able to obtain at a moderate cost from tho poultry stations in the near future sittings of eggs and young stock bred from guaranteed layers — a fact which should be kept steadily in view by those whose motto is "The hen that laye is the hen that pays."
