The Big River mine manager reports thui during the week the main shaft has bees sunk a further distance of 9ft, -making a totaJi of 120 ft from No. -8 -level.
The Warden had something to say at yes* torday'a sitting of the court against the granting of residence areas, to both husband and wife. In declining several applications Mr Kenrick stated •thwfc be did not propose t<> grant a residence area to a man «ad then on adjoining area to his wife. It waa at onaer manifesrt that both could not comply with Vhe residential conditions, whiie the granting of ! the additional acre might prevent bona fide: settlers from getting an area. He was determined to prevent -anything in the nature of trafficking in land. Work on the Paparoa Coal Company's leasa is being pushed rapidly forward. There are now over 170 men, employed on the various works. The dray road to t&£# lower camp has been completed, and^trafiic is already passing over it. Tie men who were employed on this work have now been transferred -to the formation of the company's railway line, and if this work is pushed on as energetically as 'the road-making, the company's railway will be finished long before the Blackball connecting line, unless fchst lalter work is attacked in a. more vigorous fashion than has hitherto orevailed. February 14. The Blackwater Lagoons dredge is to b* shifted to a dam on the Snowy Biyer. The Blackwater dredge is working along* side Doig's freehold, and there are indica* tions of a gradual improvement in the wash. Hie dredge is about half a mile distant from the Chinese workings, where good gold has been got. The Consolidated Company has some 401 men engaged at the Birthday mine. The Blackwater Reefs -shaft is to Be sunk a distance of 500 ft, and the depth reached ail the present time is 120 ft. The tunnels (800 ft and 900 ft long) are being driven, and are at present in 700 ft and 300 ft respectively. One tunnel is folloing the reef, while the other has struck a reef 18in thick, showing goodl gold throughout. February 17. The ICorth Beach dredge is at present shut; down for want of sufficient water in the dam. Heavy Tain has fallen all night, and will be of great benefit to miners. The Pactolus No. 2 got 1230z for 132 hours* work; Callaghan's Creek, 350z lOdwt for 130 hours ; No Town Creek, 340z ; Pactolus No. 1 ? 320z lOdwt for 225 hours; Blackwater River* 19oz 6dwt for 128 hours.
