FRAUDS,
TWO YEARS' IMPRISONMENT.
ADELAIDE, February 12. After the longest criminal tiial in the history of the State, Tucker and Forwoo:! were found guilty of defrauding the Customs Department, and each was sentenced to two years' imprisonment The above case came before the Adelaide Police Court in October last. Pile information, which was sipjnod by Mr Smart, the acting-collector of Customs, alleged— "That in June. 1896. Charles Tucker and Frederick William Forworwl, both of Port Adelaide, unlawfully conspired with Wallace Tucker, late of Adelaide, hotelkeeper, now deceased, to cheat and defraud Queen Victoria and her successors of divers large sums of money, and fraudulently obtained and took from the control of officers of the Customs large quantities of goods liable to j Customs duties without payment of such duties by fal«e and fraudulent pretences that proper duties had been duly paid." During tho hearing at the Criminal Court Percy WbJtton, chief clerk in the Commonwealth Audit Department, stated that the total lodgments by Martin and Co. for duty from January, 18S6, to July, 1906, was £69,774. The total paid to the Customs on account of duty on their goode in that period was £36,656, leaving a balance of I £,Vi nfl ahnti, duty. >
