MISHAP TO THE RIMU.
A mishap occurred to the Rimu at Patterson's Inlet on Friday afternoon. She had loaded a part cargo of timber at Collins's mill, and while trying to make the offing she ran aground on a place called Mud Island, and stuck fast. She went aground near the top of high water, and all attempts to float her off failed. On Saturday evening the Invercargill was despatched to her assistance, but failed to tow her off. The tides are falling off daily, and it is expected that the Rimu will have to remain in her present position until the spring tides, about a week hence. There is not the slightest possibility of serious danger to the steamer, as she is aground in one of the safest bays in the colony.and her refloating is simply a matter of waiting for a favourable tide. At the time she groundeo there was about 16,000 ft of timber on board, and although it was promptly put over the side it did not lighten her sufficiently to let her float off again. The Invercargill service will be maintained by the Invercargill, which returns from Waikawa with timber to-day, and, after discharging and loading, sails again this evening for Icvercargill.
