INTERNATIONAL BAND CONTEST.
SOLO COMPETITIONS.
CHRISTCHURCH, February 11. The Exhibition band contest started to-day. The proceedings opened at 9 a.m., with the B flat bass preliminary competition, eight players taking part. The most popular pieces with the competitors were : " Sehn•ucht" and "In Cellar Cool." The following is the order in wliich the soloists appeared :— T. Barton (Denniston), C. Clayton (Gisborne), E. Fraser (Dunedin Navals), C. Smith (Mornington), W. Crosby (First Infantry, Auckland), N. Allen (Taranaki Garrison), C. Webster (Kaikorai), and C. Cr. Gallop (Wcolston). T. H. King (Oaniaru Garrison), and R. Brown (Invercargill), did not appear. The judge (Mr W. S. King) selected Messrs T. Barton, E. Fraser, and C. G. Gallop to play off for first and second- places. The three competitors named performed most satisfactorily, Gallop being, particularly sucessful. The haritone competition was then commenced. There was 29 entries, and 21 appeared to take part. Doig (Dunedin Navals), R. Little (Kaikorai), C Greening (Wellington Gameon), R. May (Hastings), W. Yeoman (Dunedin Navals), G. Jenner (Wanganui Garrison), W. Munro (Greymouth), J. Co - quhoun (Newcastle City), and A. Hall (Mornington). The following players were selected to play in the finals:— E. Gilbert, Highman, J. Elder, A. Martin, J. S. Barton, and G. Jenner.
