THE ANNUAL MEETING.

WELLINGTON, January 31. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute was held to-day, Sir James Hector presiding. Tho president's report stated that the Government had decided to publish a work on New Zealand mollusca, and had appointed Mr H. Suter, of Auckland, as editor. It was al-^o reported that there* were 25 honorary members of the institute and 732 on the roll of the various incorporated societies. The Hutton Memorial Committee reported that £350 had been raised fiom private subscriptions. The committeerecommended that as the subscription from the North Island had been small tho fund should not be closed; also that thn«<> trustees be appointed to control the fund-, that the three trustee.-, be authorised to procure a bron/o medal, at a cost of not moie than £100. to be known as the Hutton modal; that the balance of the fund be lmestcd, and that interest arising therefrom be used for the furtherance of the object- of the fund ; that the Hutton medal be awarded from time to time to person* who hate made tome notable contribution in connection with zoology, botany, or geology; that a grant be made from tUo accrumg interest from time to time to porson-s or committees who require assistance an prosecuting research.
