OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.
QUARTERLY RETURNS
The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended December 31,. 1906. •which have been compiled by the secretary of the Otago Education Board, show that there were 229 echook in operation in this district, employing 211 malps and 318 female teachers. The number of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 18,915, and at the end of the quarter 18,995, comprising 9764 boya and 9231 girls. The average attendance was 8563 boys and 7564 girls, making a. total of 16,527,— being 686 lees than the total for the previous quarter, and 782 less than for the December quarter, 1905. The number of pupils admitted during the quarter was 600 boys and 516 girls,— total 1116.
The averages of the city and suburban schools for the quarter were: — Albany street, 579; Forbury, 531; Caveraham, 507; High Street, 475; Kaikorai, 457; George Street, 442; Arthur Street. 429; Union Street, 425; North-East Valley. 407; Macandrew Road, 399; Mornington, 361; Xorxnal, 348; Kensington, 206; Mussel burgh, 173; Maori Hill, 162; Ravensbourne, 155; Anderson's Bay, 116; St. Clair, 94; Wakari, 89; Leith Valley, 46. The attendances at Oama.ru were:— North School, 311; South, 234; Middle. 252. At the Pistrict High Schools :— Port Chalmers. 377; Balclutha, 307; Tokonia-iriro, 255; Lawrence, 251: Mosaic], 216; Palnaewton, 174; Tapanui, 170; Nasebv, 145, Hamrxlen, 105.
