GLENAVY.

June 25.—The weather, which had been beautifully fine here for some weeks, broke up last Sunday, when heavy rain fell, accompanied by a blustering south-easter. School.—The pupils at the Glenavy School presented their head master, Mr W. O. Gilmore, with a handsome overmantel as a token of their respect ana esteem on. the occasion of his marriage. Refreshments were provided, and a musical programme gone through, and ■i most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Social.—A farewell Bocial to Mis 3 Gilraour and Mr J. P. Gilmoar was given in the school hist Friday evening, the building being comfortably filled. A progressive euchre match was played, and provided much enjoyment, Mr J. BlaLkie proving tha highest scorer for the men's side with 11 games, while Miss Lovey Smart was the highest scorer for , the ladies with nine games to Her credit. A most enjoyable dance followed, and waa kept > up. with spirit till 2 a.m.. when the singing cf "Auld lang syne" brought thU most enjoyable event to a close. Bifle Club.-^-This up-to-date club paraded under Captain. Williams last Thursday afternoon, and fired a volley to the memory of (h« late Right Hon. R. J. Seddon, Premier and Defence Minister of New Zealand. It is the club's intention to hold a social on July 13, and an energetic committee has all details in h^x>^ l so, given a> fine night, a , successful function is assured. Obituary.—l regret to record tha death of Pani Temuraki, a Maori lady of advanced age, who died at the Waitaki Kaik last Sunday morning. Deceased waa a member of the Kgaati Waitahi and Ngaati Mamoe tribes, aud was greatly respected by her own people and pakeha alike. Preparations are now being made for a tangi, and representatives are expected from the various kaiks of the WAiponomui shortly.
