MINORITY REPRESENTATION.
{From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, December 8. !A comparison of the election returns for $he 16 electorates in the Auckland district shows that, whilst the Goverment was successful in securing 10 seats as against six for the Opposition, the votes cast for the latter party were over 3000 in excess of those recorded in favour of Government candidates. This fact is explained by the splitting of votes by the -opponents of the Government in the Bay of Islands, Parnell, and Auckland East districts, in each of ■which districts the . successful candidate represents only a minority. A calculation of the votes cast in the 16 districts as issued Upon the returns to hand shows that some 38,400 votes were cast for Government candidates, as against 41,667 for candidates in opposition to the Government, thus leaving a balance of 3177 votes in favour of th/ candidates who were declared opponents of the Government. For Labour candidates 495 votes were recorded, and 1469 were given to Independent candidates.
