A lot oil money also found its way into the hands o£ the bookmakers, who were present in krga numbers. There was only one ' 10s _ ticket on. -Crown QHild, the holder J of which received' i?sl 15s. The weather was fine for the opening of the 2?ew» Brighton- Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. Owing to the decision ofjrhe Tramr •wuy Board no' to take ovejr the' line past the club's " course, the club has decided to for fresh quarters,^ ani in tihe me-antiine- its meetings will probably be- held* at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Cub's grotinds. Almond was brought out again for the Dash,' Handicap, °in whicn ihe was in front all^ the way, and beat Elsa Huon comfortably at the finish. Almond is a full brother to- Lord Althorp, both being grey sons of Almonf. and Lady Thorp. • C Piper has j-eceived tbxee additions to his tea.ro from. Australia in the shape of Value^ a foitr-jyear-old 1 gelding, by Valiaait — Lady 1 ' Louis ; , Pansy, a four-year-old mare, by Huon Prince — Verbina, by Vancleve; and The Heir, well known on local tracks, who is returning after a spell. D. J. Price brought three trotters back from Australia, with iim. Lady Cedo and Flotadora are both ponies by Tuxedo, and G-anny as by Orion, the sdre of Occidental. Cedo has 2.55 against her, but the other pair ture maidenslearn from ~R: M'Millan that the Anuerican-"bi-ed stallions, Mauxititis, Harold Dillon, and "Wallaoe L., ate all being freely patronised. Harold Dillon's book is full, among the 1 mares •to visit' hhn being Ribbonwood's dam, Tenncspee-, (dam of. Black Ohild), and Cincinnati (full sjister to Black Child), by Rothschild— Tennessee. After thiesir moderate form at Wanganud, Sir George Clifford decided not to send his harsos on to Hastings, ansl they retraraed home on
Tuesday. A. piece of bad luck happened to Mr J. F. •Iteid at the Canowie Stud on Sunday morning,
■when the colt foal by Pilgrim's Progress — Stepka, by St. Leger— Stepieldt, broke his shoulder. An effort is being made by Mr J. E. Charlton, M.H.C.V.S., to save the youngster. Stepka is at present at Canowie on a visit to St. Ambrose
Mr G-. G. Stead lias sold the English-bred Martian, by Martagon — Otterden, to Mr J. F. Buclianan^the owner of Ingleneuk and Co. I have not heard what Mr Buchanan intends .o do with the "little Englishman." Apart froni his value as a racehorse, Martian should make a fine sire. » A rumour has been current here during the last two days to the effect that Bulawayo has pon.s amiss, but, so far I have been unable to find any confirmation of it. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held on Tuesday. The following programmes were ■approved: — Mount Soniers Sports Club, Springburn Sports Club. Fairlie Raoing Club, Tinwald Bacing Chib. Methcen Sports Club, South Canterbury Jockey Club, Pleasant Point Eacing Club, Ksiikoura Eacing Club, Studholme Mounted Rifles' sports, Havelock Hack Racing Club, andi Rakaia Sports Club. Gentlemen liders' certificates were issued to S. Harding. J. Jackson, P. G-. ..Williams, "W. E. G-ireen, A. HuddLestone, H. J. Pickering, and J B. Dick; trainers' licenses to G-. A. ZPine. T. Quaine, A. Eore, G.^W. M'Gee, and T. Sheerian; and jockeys,' licenses to W. Brown, J. T. Hird. F. M. Mahoney, J. H. Stevens, J. W. M'Corniick, and J. Scoular. 'A jockey's Jiosnse was granted to H. Donovan from October 13. The following transfer was approved:— Br f Purity, by The Officer— Enid, rfroin Hon. J. D. Ormond to J. Curling. An application for the removal of the disqualification of Good Sight was declined A meeting 'of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held on "Wednesday, there
being present: Messrs P. Selig (president), C. S. Howell, W. Haywara, E. Clarkson, W. G. Ganard, A. L. Myers, and T. Marr. Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs C. F. Marr and J. H. Pollock. Th© election of office-bearers resulted as follows: — President. Mr P. Selig; vice-president, Mr A. L. Myers; treasurer, Mr T. Marr; Licensing Committee. Messrs W. G. Garrard and A. L. Tftyeis; Foreign Horse Committee, Messrs W. G. Garrard and W. Hay ward'; examiner of foieign horses, Mr W. G. Garrard ; Appeal Committee, Messrs P. Selig and T. Mar: ; secretary, Mr J. B. Norris; auditor, Mr C. J. Marshall. It was decided to provide a clerical assistant for thp secretary. A foreign horse certificate was issued for JSelle Bentwood' (iate Ivannoe), on the recommendation of the Foreign Horse Committee. The disqtialification for six months imposed on J. Hanna and the mare Wild Wind by the Amberley Steeplechase Club for deliberate pulling in the Waipara Handicap was endorsed, after the conduct of the case had been criticised. It was decided Co* remove the disqualification incurred by Virbeen and May for competing at unregistered meetings. Licenses as recommended by the Licensing Committee were granted, and it was decided to obtain a supply of amended license forms. Eleven programntes were passed.
The" weights for the Stewards' Handicap made their appearance on Friday, and the general impression is that the adjustments are quite up to Mr Henrys's best standard. A lot of interest was evinced in the weight likely to be allotted to Machine Gun. After his reoenl form he could not have got in with any less ; but on looking down the list I nstice a few smart ones in at> light weights, so I am in- , clined to think that the top weight is just about right. He is, however, -such a brilliant sprinter that-he must be given a big chance. Vladimir is well treated, and if he is all right on the day he will be very hard to beat. Petrovna is given a chance. Stronghold, on his best form, would be very dangerous, but he is too unreliable. Master Alix is nicely
aced, and Solution must also be dangerous. The Dunedin pair, Ailsa, and Crichton", are well treated, and they are likely to play a prominent part in the decision, of the race. To-ujotow is well enough in, and if she can be caught all right she will be hard to beat. She is, however, a>- difficult mare to handle, and she is hard to catch just right. Cuneiform and Munjeet are reckoned the best of the three-year-olds, and probably this estimate is right. Munjeet showed her superiority to the rest of her age last season, and Cuneiform's Hawke's Bay Guineas form is attractive. One of this pair may represent Yaldhurst, and if so it will be hard^to find a more likely winner. Glenowlet is another three-year-old well treated in the matter of weight, but on two-year-old form none of the -others of the same age can' have much chance. Hy fancies for the race are Machine Gun, Ailsa, Crichton, and the Yaldhurst representative.
5 - Octobei 9. MartiavD 1 lias-coined Pine's string at Rir- ' carton, ' so it^ i^eyident 'that Mr Buchanan . intends- to ggi y e him a chance to earn further distinction on the.-racec6urse.
Mason""waa down^af^Riocairton on Thursday with several of the* Yaldhurst horses. Nigafcfall, Noetmfornr, Sungod, Isolt, and Munjeet were not' "stripped, "but they all looked fresh and well. Savoury, .Delaware," Porcelain, and ..Eden were given' 'a 'sprih't over five furlongo.'' Saivoury showed to most and Eden to leas* advantage. Oanieform returnecl from Hast-ings-on Saturday, looking well" after his exertions'/in the Guineas.
Noxious Weed gave an erratic display 'n a •schooling task on Saturday. l like tracks at Raccsttton auei in fine ordar now, and p-lenty of fast work is being meted out to the horses wanted for spring engagements
Tho local Cup horses are all looking well except Tirole. who is not galloping so pleasingly as he did last antunra.
Very few of -the Ricoarton representatives can have any chance in the Cup, however, and I expect several of them will drop out when the next nayment becomes due.
Hulcu, Nkrciffsug, Canada, and Highland Fling . left for Dunedin to-day. The thrs" first-named are very well-, and should be worth watching.
Riccarton stables will be well represented at "Wellington next week. Among tlie liors's likely to iourney to the Hutt are Clanburu, Blythemaid. Signalman, Cannie Chiel, Pa® Seul, Graduated Tax, and the two-year-olds Iva.noft' (S'tepiuak — Arline colt), Kurriemuir (Clanranald — Madowla filly), and Knastikoif (Stepniak — Ambush colt). Considerable interest centres round the juveniles, who will be pitted' against the best of the North Island lot.
I hear that the connections of Machine Gnu are very sweet or. his chance in the Stewards' Handicap.
- At Sir George Clifford's Stcmyhurst s^ud Safeguard, by MaxLin — Galatea, has produced a colt to Clanraiiald.
There is no business to record on the New Zealand Cup, the betting on which has beer, very quist this year. Nightfall is ' a firm favourite at 4 to I', with very little money available at the price. In double betting Machine Gun, Muujeet, Cruciformi, and Solution are tho short-priceel ones for / the Stewards" Handicap. Machine Gun is the actual favcuiute, with Munjeet next in. demand. If the betting market can b9 accepted as a guide, and it frequently oam, Munjeet is iikely to carry Mr Stead's colours in the six-furlong race.
Joe Chamberlain was scratched for the New Zealand Cup at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
