HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. WELLINGTON, October 2.
The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from, .the High Commissioner, dated London,, 30th lilt. : — The mutton market is weak, trade for a.ll classes being very slow. Prices aro barely maintained. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 3Jd (? 4Jd) pea- lb; for North Island mutton, 3gd per lb, of which there is a moderate supply. Prime Plate mutton, is in large supply. The average price is Sgd per lb. Lamb: The market is veiy dull, stocks in hand being heavy. There is a scarcity of prime quality lamb The average X-»nce to-day for New Zealaoid lamb is : Canterbury brand and for brands Other than Canterbury 19 5d per lb for light-weights, and 4UI per lb for heavy-weights. Beef: Tha marke* is quiet, and supplies of River Pljite beef heavy. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand sicj light. The average price to-day for New Zealand beef is 3^d per lb for hinds,, and 2Jd per lb for fores. The butter market- is firm, with an improved demand. Danish, 1235; Canadian, 109s ; salt, 112s ; saltless Australian, 109s; salt, 113s. The demand for saltless butter has been caused by blending. The cheese market is firm, and there is a better demand. Canadian, 56s> per cwt. The hemp market is firm, with a better demand. Price of New Zealand hemp : Fair grade Wellington, on spot, is £30; October to December shipments, £30 ids. The cocksfoot seed market is quie-t. Th© average price for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot, weighing 17lb per bushel, on spot, is 52s per cwt.
