There is a rather widely diffused belief that women do very amusing things with telegraph-blanks and cheque books. Put a young woman, on one occasion at least, displayed in the use of the telegraph a more than maso'ilin© brevity, thriftmess and sang froid.

A young man, who was deeply in love with this fair lady, who Jived in anothor town in Michigan, decided that the only thing for him was to offer his hand and heart. So he- went to the- telegraph office and sont ihis message:
