RACING IN NEW ZEALAND
GERALDINE SPRING AIEETING. (Bt Ouk Special Repobtek.) First Day — Thursday, September 28.
The Geraldine R-acing Club commenced its spring meeting in fine weather, and thera was a good attendance. An unfortunate accident happened in the Hurdle Race, in which Agitator fell and rolled over Mi B. R. Mac Donald, the well-known gentleman rider, who had the mount on the Artillery gelding. Mr Mac Donald was removed to a private house in the vicinity of the racecourse, and attended to by four doetois. At latest advices, although he was still unconscious, he was showing signs of ultimately making a recovery. A good race was witnessed in tha Geraldine Cup, and Calibre had to be hard! ridden to stall off Clanburn's challenge at the finish. Tessera appeared to lose the Flying Handicap through a piece of indifferent riding on King's part, who allowed! Makaroff to get up on the rails. Hewitt arrived on the course during the middle of the afternoon, and signalised his return to> New Zealand by getting tip on the winner of the last raoe. During the day £1347 was put through the machine as compared with last year's total of £1244. The club also licensed a number of bookmakers. Details: —
