CHRISTCHURCH NEWS NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 19.
In reference to the proposal to set up a tribunal over the- voucher business, Mr Fisher stated this morning: — "I am unaware whether it is to be a purely judicial tribunal or whether 'it is to have the free scope of a Roj-al Commission. I am still convinced that my witnesses are right, and I welcome the possibility of a solution of this mystery. The Government has only done what Parliament would have done in the first instance but for the strenuous opposition of the Premier. The proposed inquiry will be of no value unless the order of reference is unrestricted, the inquiry open to the public and the press, and the witnesses submitted to cross-exami-nation. This inquiry, like that of the Auditor-general's, has been granted at the point of tha bayonet, but public opinion has at last compelled the Government to recognice its duty in reference to this matter. I am quite satisfied the business methods of the Government departments will have to be remodelled as a result of a public investigation "
