KNAPDALE.

September 18. — For some time the road to Gore near the Knapdale Station has been -In a dangerous condition on account of the denudation by the river. At two places there is not much more than room for two vehicles to pass each other. The banks also are very eteep. The County Council has sent its gang to rectify matters. At the narrowest place it is erecting extensive protective works. Kails are being driven in near the bank. To these ordinary wires will be atta-ched from below water-level to a height of about 6ft. Between this outer fencing and the bank •wire netting stuffed with scrub will be placed and held firm by earth placed behind. At another place the road will be widened, a - -piece of land having ' been acquired from Messrs Baird for the purocse. Band of Hope.— Tha usual monthly meeting of the Band of Hope took place in the church hall on Friday evening last. There ■was a fair attendance, Mr Pauiin occupying the chair. Items were contributed by Miss Clara Collins and the Rev. T. Pauiin (recitations), and songs by Masters Prebble (2) and Miss Eggleton. The centre of attraction for the evening was. an address by the Rev. Mr Hosking, Methodist minister of Gore, whose remarks were highly appreciated. " Presentation. — On Monday evening, 4th ' inst., the members of Mr Paulin's Bible and shorthand classes paid him a surprise visit " »t the manse. After indulging in games and - pleasant social intercourse Mr John Dickson, -on behalf of the classes, presented Mr Paulin with a handsome swinging lamp. In doing es he referred to their high appreciation of Mr Paulin's weekly classes. Mr R. Baiid spoke in similar vein. Mr W. D. Marshall then handed Miss Hastie a lady's companion, ' asking her to accept it as some recompense for her interest in the entertainment of the "> young people. Both Miss Hastie and Mr Pauiin suitably replied in acknowledgment of the gifts. Valedictory. — Mr Dohn Scott, who has recently left the Knapdale district to take over a farm in Merino Downs, was given a faare- - well social in the Otama Hall, when he was presented with a handsome suite of furniture. - Sir Scott was a member of the School Committee. The vacancy caused by his departure has been filled by the election of Mr Pauiin »t a meeting of the committee held on Monfay evening last.
