MORVEN.
Sept-ember 23. — Since last I wrote Morven fas net been able j -omplain cl a dearth of water. "We have had rain in all forms, jrom Scotch mist to heavy downpour. About "l> fortnight ago the Dog Kennel Creek, Wollen by the steady rain, overflowed, and Jhe .water rolled down the Morven streets. . tn the middle of the road it was over the. torses' knees, while it was practically im- ■ possible to get near the shops. This lasted lor a couple of daya, and then it gradually
pleared away; but now, as I write, it is raining away as hard as ever, so that thica is every prospect of another flood. The ►farmers are suffering heavily, as some of z (the sheep are lambing, and the water in Borne places is drowning the lambs. Church, Social. — The annual soiree in connection with the Morven Presbyterian Church ■was held in the hall on Thursday, Septem"ber 14. The Eev. Mr Dickie presided over «> large meeting of the congregation, and introduced the Key. Messrs Morrison and Porter, who each made an eloquent appeal %b ihe congregation to furtfocs church work by eradicating all evil influences. They were "" listened to very attentively, and their humorous stories — for what is a soiree without wit? ". — were loudly applauded. During the evening a choir, under the leadership of Mr \Reid, and accompanied by Mr Ray on the organ, rendered a number . of anthems in a , very' pleasing manner. Mr M'Taggart, on behalf of the congregation, presented Mr ■"'Morrison with a purse of sovereigns as a tangible proof of the appreciation of his work during the vacancy in the Morven pulpit. Mr Morrison, in reply, thanked the - member's hetrtily, and referred to Mr Dickie's good points, and hoped that the people __ "were rallying round Him. Tea was dispense'! - l>y the ladies, and before the doxology was - . pronounced Mr Hay, in a clever speech, ■= thanked all those who had helped to make ""the meeting so successful.
Volunteers. — At a meeting of the local section on Wednesday, 13th. inst., Lieutenant - QChomas in the chair, it was decided to form
»■ club in connection with the Volunteers,
«nd to meet on Wednesday evenings. A --nominal subscription was fixed for outsiders '_ who wished to join.
Ploughing. — One of our young ploughmen, | Mr Alexander Brown, jun., is proving a ~ great success at ploughing matches.
