SOUTHLAND POULTRY SHOW»

(Fbom Otjb Owk Cobrespondent.) INVERCARGILL, Juno 28. 'The nineteenth annual show 5f the Southland Poultry, Bird, Pet, and Dop Society was commenced to-day in. the Zealandia Hall. The number of entries far exceeded those of any previous year. The floor space of the hall was taxed to the uttermost, and .when the people were present at night locomotion was by no means easy. The fea~l!ures of the show were the exhibits in the silver Wyandottes and collies, and the judge in all the classes (Mr James Maude, of Victoria) was particularly well pleased with these classes, and said that the silver Wyandottes wore the best he

had ever judged in New Zealand. Although these two classes stood out from the rest, the exhibits in all the other classes were very good, and would stand comparison with any other show in the colony. Mr J. E. Hayne's Zealandia King is, in Mr Maude's opinion, the beat collie shown on the bench in Australasia. Messrs Double Brothers' silver Wyandotte cock, which took the special prize for the best bird of any class in the show, was a splendid bird in every way, and, unlike most birds nowadays, is a true type. Mr Boyle, of Dunedin, showed some, Anconas, which were the first of their kind to be seen in Invercargill, and they were much admired. Another pen that took the public fancy was Mr Stewart's six laying hens of the black Orpington breed, lately imported by him, and closely related to the winners in the late Hawkesbury (N.S.VV.) con rest. The Bowmont Street Home made a fine display of trussed poultry, while the Utility Poultry Farm, Invercargill, made a big show of live poultry. Mr G. I. Moffett exhibited a fine young collie, Glenfoyle, which carried everything before him in the local class. Mr Hyde, Government Poultry Expert, was present, and gave an exhibition of plucking, and also one of cramming, both being very interesting to the large assembly, who were mostly astonished at his prowess. Mr J. R. Hayne's Zealandia King took the special prize for the best non-sporting dog in the show, and Mr T. Hides took the special for best sporting dog with his fox terrier dog Lindon Lionel. The committee worked hard, and is to be congratulated on the success of the show ; and the secretary (Mr R. Day) is deserving of special mention. The show will be continued to-morrow. Following is the prize list : — .
