CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 27. The Canterbury Rugby Union decided to instruct its delegates to the Now Zealand Union not to vote on the question of the appointment of a coach for tho New Zealand team to be discussed at a meeting of the Union on July 18. The Chairman said his only feeling in the matter was that now that it was decided to send a team Home he wished to see it go under the best possible auspices, and represent the colony in its beat possible manner; but he could not help feeling that the appointment of a coach and of the particular coach appointed would probably establish an amount of discord calculated to be inimical to the success of the team. He hoped he was wrong, but it would have been better for all concerned if the idea had not been mooted. Having gone ho far, however, he felt it was too late in the day to object Generally these views were supported by other members of the committee.

Mr Saxton, referee in the Sydenham versus Merrivale game last Saturday, wrote stating that D. Mahoney, a member of the Sydenham team, after being cautioned in the early part of the game -for making offensive remarks to him, had in the last spell, whilst lying on the ground, kicked out at Merrivale players, and used foul language. Mr Saxton attended, and was questioned at some length with regard to his allegations. Mahoney also attended, and was questioned. He denied having addiessed offensive remarks to the referee, and he had no recollection of having kicked oxit at any of the Merrivale team, or of Inving used the language complained of. He could not recollect beeing ordered off the ground, as he had been iniured. He described the nature of his injuries. His medical adviser, who was communicated with, stated the nature of Mahoney's inii.ries, which was totally different from Mahoney's description.
