The Montessuma dredge, after having been thoroughly oveihauled and repaired, has returned operations. The Greenstone Junction return last -week ■was 14cz 4dwt for the week. The &Teensiono Creek dredge met with an accident to the pontoons during the week, a stone from the elevator staving in a sf-ern plank, and, the vessel striking another in front, resulted in % similar breach there. However, by strenuous efforts, the dredge was saved fzom sinking. The owners are now giving the pontoons a thorough overhaul, replacing all planking that shows any signs of perishing. The Kumswa Syndicate's dredge is expected to get a start early this week, the screen part and sections having come to hand. June 16. Gold dredging matters in the southern portion of the district at present are in a somewhat bad way. Most of the companies have fallen on evil days, and what once promised to he a live industry is now supported by three machines — viz.. the Shellback. Nelsons, and the Prince of Wales. The Shellback, •which at the commencement had some trouble ■with the machinery, is now running smoothly. A large face has been opened out, and payable yields are expected during the next few -weeks. The Kohinoor diedge is, hung up. It appears that the dredge had worked across the .stream, but. the wash becoming very deep and the dredge being unable to' bottom, did not get very satisfactory yields, and operations were in consequence suspended. An expert visited th«" groTXXiS to report oai -tlie position. It" is probable thdi the v dredge" V?ill be ttiT.ived,,a&d ■worked through. her bwri'tailings towaius *Bz&-~ man's Gully, Where" it' is believed she could, clean up the bottom. Nelson's dredge has hardly got a fair start yet, as several alterations have had to be made to the machinery. At the present time the dredge is idle while repairs are being effected to the machinery, but it is anticipated work ■will' be resumed on Saturday. The prospects of this claim are considered to be of a very favourable nature. The Prince of Wales tributers are putting in a good deal of work, but the wash, being very heavy and rough, taxes the machine to its utmost. The returns, it is said, yield satisfactory wages to ihe tributers. .- ., The Ross Day Dawn machinery is being gradually dismantled dud sold. In the "far south" it has beetn decided to work the Saltwater claim by hydraulic ehiicing instead of dredging, as at first tendedJune 18, The ahaxe market continues to improve, and most marketable stock has an upward tendency. Janiieson's Rewards ana quoted at 325; No Towns, 235; Nelson Creeks. 21s; BignelFs, 14s 6d. Slab Huts eased off, but are still above par. The face looks well, and alinowg-L the extent of the wash is uncertain there is no present appearance of thinning cut: The yield will give als dividend. The No Tbwn dredge obtained 670z. There is 110 alteration in the appearance of the wash. The Pactoius Company 86oz for a full ran of botih. dredges. The machines are on the same line as the Jamieson's Rev/ard dredge, and should improve. TOie Slab Hut dredge did not work well last •week Only getting about fhree days' work in. The return was 18oz. The return of the Calligan's dredge fell off, T>eing outside the regular run of gold. The yield was 16oz. The Totara_ Flat dredge, now run by a few miniHrs, is doing well, and is even now proving a complete success.
