THE MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION.
The monthly meeting of the directors of the Ofcago Farmers' Union Mutual Fire Insurance Association was held on Friday afternoon in the registered office of the association (Messrs Pram, Mitchell, and Co.), Water street, when all the directors were present, Mr Wm. Grey (chairman) presiding. The Secretary reported that highly successful progress had been mad© and the accession of new business was most encouraging. Gratification was expressed that Southland, Canterbury, and Nelson had agreed to join Otago; thus forming one association for the South Island. The information from Mr Jas. Begg re Ontai-io mutual bvjsiness was discussed, and highly approved of.
One of the difficulties Mr Seddon had to negotiate at one of the scholastic establishments he visited on his trip to Oamaru was a row of closely-set posts between which the schoolboys and an ordinary man might squeeze ; but Mr Seddon is no ordinary man, and it was found one of the events in his life had occurred. He could neither vault nor jump the obstruction, and to attempt to squeeze through might have ended in the head of the Government coming to grief. The solution came when someone suggested the cart gate, and this was accepted, with the- happiest results. The s.s. Rose Casey arrived at Riverton on Friday with a full cargo. The captain reports (says the Western Star) thai since the erection of the new railway bridge the bar has silted up. and great difficulty is experienced in bring-inpr the vessel in. At the next meeting of the Borough Council the question will come up for discussion as to the advisability of erecting a stone wall and sheathing for a distance of 10 chains out from the mouth of the river on the north side. This will hav-e the effect _of scouring away the existing bar and making a good channel, thus allowing steamers to come in at half -tide.
