THE CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS.
OHRISTCHUiJCH, June 9. f Owing to -the wet weather the local grain, j and produce markets have been very quiet, | and there has been almost an entire absence ' of offerings. The decline in the London wheat market has lowered, the tone here, and buyers are therefore not anzious to operate, whilst, on tha other hand, there is no disposition on the- part of growers to accept reduced rates. j Qsiii are difficult to get at buyers' prices, J
and most of the outside orders are b n ing supplied from Southland. Wet weather has prevented deliveries of both grain and produce. Potatoes are firm, as stocks in hand are low, and supplies are coming forward slowly on account of <lie heavy rains-. The crop" has turned out much better than -was expected, and the potatoes appear to be keeping very well; while there hare been no complaints from those who have received shipments from Lyttelton. j Onions are scarce and prices are firmer, £8 10s being paid for immediate delivery, while £9 has bean paid by forward buyers. jiining. THE POULTRY MARKET. Messrs A. Mornzson and Co. report as follows:— UJhere is an exceptionally brisk demand for poultry, and hardly suffi ci ent is coming forward to satisfy existing orders for South Africa. We can quote at the present time the following revised prices for bspoifc (turkeva should not be over 10 months, gobblers not weighing less tiian 13lb, nnd hens not less than 91b) : 8d per lb for gobblers and 6d for neiis. If young, the heavier the bird the better >,he prico that can be obtained. Goslings not ! over six months, 81b and over, and geese not less than 101b, 5s per pair; below these weights 4s per pair. Ducks and ducklings from 4lb upwards, 3s 9d per pair; from 31b to 41b, 3* per pair. Fowls from 3£lb to 41b, Ss. The prices indicated for poultry for export are for on trucks at country railway stations. Local prices are fairly firm, but the demand is, not very Isrge. Turkeys, 7d par lb for hens, Sd per lb for gobblers; geese, 4s to 5s 6d; ducks, from 3a 6d to 4s ; roosters, 33 6d to 4s 9d , fowls, 2s to 3s 6d. The local prices are of course subject to railage, and therefore, wo think, no better than export prices.
