Chess Items.
Mr J. Edwards, vice-president of the New Zealand Chess Association, has issued a circular convening a meeting of the Association in Wellington on June 22.
An exhibition of simultaneous 1 play will be given at the Otago Chess Club's rooms on June 28, when Mrs J. Edwards, ex-ohampion of New Zealand will engage 12 players in contest.
Entries for the senior championship of the Otago Chess Club closed on 3(MJh ult. The competitors are: D. Forsyth, F. J. Mouat, J. H. P. Hamel. J. Edwards, G. D. Wright, A. Mellor, O. Balk, J. Lang, and F. W. Clayton.
Mr J. A. Connell, for the past three years secretary to the New Zealand 1 Chess Association, is leaving Wellington for Blenheim, where he is to edit a new journalistic venture, the Marlborough Herald. Mr Connell has our best wishes for his future success.
Mr J. A. Pietzcker, a leading Sydney player, ■who has been enjoying a. trip through New Zealand, returned to Sydney last week without coming further south, than Christchurch.
A start has been made in the Chess Club with the annual handicap tourney for the shield presented by Mr E. W. Petherick. Wins in the first round have been scored by Messrs A. W. O. Davies (champion of New Zealand), P. Still, R. J. Barnes>, F. K. Kelling, and H. Gyles, jun. A chess club with a, large membership has been formed at Blenheim, Marlborough.
