It was a finis evening, Though *rosxy, and the hah was crowded to the door. The feature of the evening's enteitaiiunent was Ihe sorjgei and tab.eaux performed by the Sutton School children, under the capable direction of Miss Whit's, who deserves a word of praise for the pains she must have taken with heir youthful performeia. Miss E. Hall (Dxmedin) rendered her cofflxietifcion solo so well that she had to responl to an encore, and again received an encore for her "May morning," in Part 11. Mrs W. Thompson sang, "Close your dreamy eyes" and "A dream of home," and with Mr Thompson took part in a duet, "Jack and Jill." A glee*, "Let the hills resound," was very nicely sui'g by Mesdames Thompson and Robertson and Messrs M'Clintock and M'Donald. Mr J. H. MaAherm was heartily applauded for "The song ibe anvil sings," as was a'so Mr R. Walker for his isong. Mr James's comicalities were also much appreciated, and a would-be Indian faJaer had several of the audience on the string. Mr D^ Kilgour's dancing of tihe Highland fling and sailor's hornpipe was very much admired. A small but efficient orchestra rendered valuable aid, and Mr J. H. Matheson and Miss Elliot played the accompaniments during tjie evening. Mr George M'Hardy made an" ideal chairman, wasting no time between the various items, and the inevitable dance followed.
A Felt Want. — Other districts smaller than Strath Taieri hwe a commonage, and the want of one for this district is freely commented on. There is a hundred on the Eock and Pillar, but it appears that about five persons only are entitled to use it. Piobably were the Land Boardi approaclned some land would be reserved for the benefit of a largfe number of residents.
