HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
An ordinary meeting of the Otago High Schools Board of Governors was held on Thursday ; present — Messrs J. B.- Sinclair (chairman), J. M. Gallaway, T. K. Sidey. M.H.R., T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., the Hon. T. Fergus, and Dr Church.
Accounts and salaries amounting to £462 7s 8d were passed for payment. The bank books were laid on the table, showing the amount in the bank at £595 9s, less outstanding cheques (£458 14s 8d). ' The Taieri County Council applied for tho right to take gravel from the board's endowment at Strath Taieri. — Ifc was decided to reply that tho removal of gravel from this endowment must cease forthwith.
Messrs Duncan and MacGregor wrote stating that they saw no objection to the repeal of the sections of the act referred to in the circular from the Education Department with a view to consolidation of statutes — namely, the preamble and sections 5 10, and 17 of " The Boys' and Girls' High Schools Act, 1877," and "The. Otago Bosks' and Gttrls' High Schools Board Empowering Act, 1896." — Received ; the department to be advised accordingly. Messrs Duncan and MacGregor also wrote stating theiv opinion that the board had power to covenant with tenants of new leases for renewal at. end of term. — It was decided that in future the board would insert a clause in leases giving right of renewal, the rent to be fixed by arbitration.
Mrs M. Anderson, less-ec of section 24-, block V, Mokoreta, applied for valuation for grass. — It was decided to reply that the terms of the lease- must be adhered' to.
"W. Smnpter, auctioneer, Oamaru, reported that section 10, block XXI, Oamaru, had beon taken up by the lato lessee, J. B. Sinclair, at £3 per annum. — Received. Hobert Craig, lessee of section 23, block V, Mokoreta, applied for permission to transfer lease to William M'Aliwoe. — Granted on the usual terms.
The Officer Commandinjr tho Otago Military Distriot wrote objecting to the alteration in the designation of the Otago Boys' High School Cadet Corps. — The Secretary explained that a sum of money had been handed over by the Harvey Memorial Committee for the purchase of uniforms ;»nd prizes on condition that the corps was named the Harvey Cadet Corps, but the department now objected to this. — The board decided to advise the rector and the Memorial Committee that tKa name of tho coids must remain as at present.
