SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

A meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago was held on the 17th, when there were present — Messrs W. Dallas, D. Borrie, T. MacGibbon, and tho Hon. H. Peldwick. The Otago Education Board gave notice of the reappointment of Mr Bonie as a commissioner, and the Southland Board gave notice of tho appointment of Mr Mac Gibbon. — H-eceived. -•.

The Education Department wrote stating that the Governor had appointed the Hon. H. Feldwick and Messrs W. Dallas and J. Hay to be school commissioners for the provincial district of Otago. — Received.

By a unanimous vote of those present, Mr Dallas was elected chairman for the ensiling terra.

The new form of lease was discussed, and ii was approved with several amendments.

W. Willocks, la/te lessee of section 2 of 35, block VI, Hillend district, the lease of which was passed in at the sale on the 2nd tilt,, wrote offering 2s 5d per acre. — Consideration was deferred till next meeting.

T. S. Miller, surveyor, wrote forwarding a. copy of subdivision of part of section 23, block I t Invercargill Hundred, for the appiova.l of the commissioners. — Approved; plans to bo deposited and sections advertised. The meeting considered the question of appointment of auctioneer to sell sections in the town of Gore, and subdivision of section pairt 23 block I, Invexcaargill Hundred.— The National Mortgage and Agency Company was appointed. _ The result of the sale of leases at Gore, Invercargill, Balclutha, Oamaru, and Arro-wtown "was noted. Walter Sumpter, auctioneer, Oamaru, wrote sta-ting that the late lessee of section 24, block 11, Papakaio, would not bid the upset of 10s, .but would give 8s per acre.— Consideration deferred. •«- Stobeit Hawker, lessee of section Ba, G-reen-field, wrote asking that the lease be> issued in the name of Bobert Hawker and Sinclair Wright. — Approved. David Dun wrote suggesting that the comanissdontrs give a half chain roadline along the \nsrteni "boundary of section 23, block XIV, Goie, provided that he and the Railway department also gave a half chain. — Consideration of this matter was deferred till next meeting. A letter was received from W. I*. Craig, applying on behalf of Mrs E. Jordan, for a lease of "section 16? block XXII, town of Palmerston, at 5s per annum. — The commissioners granted ©yearly license at ss.

Messrs Kain Bros., lessees of run 327 a, Waikaia, wroti asking for permission to erect a stable and buggy shed a.t aji estimated cost of from £65 to £72. — Approved. Warden Cruickshank wrote to the pffect that Robart Ross, M'Kinnon and Wallace, R. Monaghan, and J Baxter were working coal pits without the necessary authority, and suggesting that .they be called upon to expedite the &urvev antl preparation of leases — It was decided that the ranger be authorised to visit Waikaia and to make demand on tha parties referred to by the warden for the return of output of lignite since the application for licenses to mine coal was recommended to the warden for issue, also for payment of royalty then stipulated foT ; failing the return and payment of the royalty the parties to be informed that the commissioners will cancel the recommendations for issue of license and eject occupiers forthwith.

W. F. Inder applied for consent to transfer of lease of section 13, block XIV, Wendon, from William Alexander to William Walker.— The transfer was approved.

E. R. Bowler applied for consent to- transfer o? lease of section 5 and part 7, block IX, Waikaia district, from Kenneth M'Kenzie to W. G. Baxter and George Baxter. — The transfer was agreed to.

John Milne applied, on behalf of R. Foulkes, for consent to transfer the lease of section 10, block IX, Waikaia district to Hugh Nelson. — Transfer agTeed to accordingly.

Macalister Eros, applied for consent to transfer of leas© of section 13, block XXXVIII, town of Invercargill, from George Henry to Leah L. Hawke. — This transfer was also approved.

Patrick Maher -wrote asking for information Ifcgarding K. S. Black's right to crop land at Cattlvs Flat —Received.

The draft annual report was submitted, and, together with a letter to the Minister regarding; complaints by tenants, was approved. E. F-itzgibbon, lessee of sections 7, 8, 16, and 22, block VIII, Shotover district, wrote objecting to thn upset of Is 6d per acre. — It T.-as decided that the lessee be offered the option of surrendering his lease as from *\"ovember next.

John Tayles. lessee of sections 3 and 4, block V-, "Wendonside, wrote asking the commissioners to reconsider their decision not to allow him a concession for loss of crop by flood last year. — The commissioners could not see their way to alter their former decision. The Southland Agent forwarded: — 1. An application from T. M'Kinnel!, lessee of section 42, block VIII, Waikaia, for consent to erect a three-roomed house, and recommending tliat the same be granted. — Approved. 2. An application from W. Sutherland to purchase or lease section 7, block 11, Oteramika Hundred.— Held over for consideration. 3. An application from C. S. Long'wet for consent to transfer of lease of section 12. block LVIII, Inverca.rgil! from William Rennie to William Gutbery. — Approved on the usual conditions. 4. An application from T. Power for reduction of rent on section 20, Wairio. — The- surrender was accepted as from November 1. 5. A letter from C. MTJean asking when the lease of section 30, block XVI, Gore, would be offered fox sale. The secretary was instructed to give notice of date of sale. 6. An application from James Martin, on behalf of James Hymers, to lease sections 8, 10, and 13, block XIV, Lumsden, and suggesting that these sections, a.long with other vscant on-es m the .tovmsiiip be offered for lease at first sale. — It was agreed to offer an annual lease at 5s per section, the ground to be kept clear of weeds. 7. A letter from T. C. Ellis authorising the commissioners to hand over the lease of sections 21 and 22, Waiau, to Mr John King without collecting the amount of valuation for improvements. — Agr»ed to. The secretary lecommended that steps be taken to terminate the lease of section 17, block IX. Shotover distriot, for non-payment of rent, and that the same be offered at an upset of Is per acre. — The report was adopted. M. C. Davidson, purchaser of the lease of sections 2 and 3, block 'Xl, Wendon, wrote claiming the chaffeutter as paTt of valuation for which he had paid.— lt was decided to reply that the c>iaffcutter was not included in the valuation. In reply to a letter from the Secretary for Education, it was resolved that the commissioners offer no objection to the lands in the Waikaia, Wendon, and Wendonside being proclaimed, subject to the provisions of the Accounts and valuations amounting to £1799 15s lOd vere passed for payment.
