Milk Fever in Cows TO THE EDITOR.
Sib., — As a great number of people lose newly-calved cows through milk fever — 'I myself have lost several, — the fact 'that they can be cured if taken in time .should be pointed out, and! I think it is only right it should be known Jhow this complaint can be cured. Mr J. A. Thomson, on the new settlement at Earnscleugh, some time ago had a cow calved — one he valued very much. She took milk fever 24 hours after calving, and was down on her side, with scarcely a move in -her. He at once sent for Mr John King, a settler on Earnscleugh, who has before saved many a vahiable horse and cow down with other complaints, but had never saved any from milk fever before. He had, however, lately read in the Otago Witne&s an article copied from a Danish expert, in which it was stated that the first thing to do was to pump air into the udder. He had a bicycle pump and a quill, and pomped air first in the two teats on .top, and, when that was done, turned -the cow, and -did the same with the other -two, and kept that going till the cow was on her feet. It took 20 hours before this state was arrived at, but now she is as well as ever, with a good flow of milk. He also gave her 21b of salts as soon as it could bs got, and two doses of aconite, |oz doses, at intervals of four hours. — I am, etc., Alexandra, May 2. A. C. Iversen.
