John Skene and Son report under date, May D, as follows : — There is at present a very heavy demand ior first-class ploughmen, horsemen, and general agricultural workers, men who are thoroughly up-to-date, and can be trusted to do farm and station agricultural works in a workmanlike manner. These are the class of men farmers and others are enquiring for daily, and offering good wages. Farm and station couples are also in good demand. Good, smart milkers are always required. -Rabbit poisoners are moving out to employment regularly. We quote wages as follows : — Tip-top ploughmen, 225, 255, 27s 6d ; useful farm hands, able to plough, 20s; milkers, 17s Gd to 22s 6d ; farm couples, £70 lo £75 ; married ploughmen, £80 ; Tabbit poisoners, 20s pei week, and found; trappers, 5d to 6d per pair ; station hands, 20s, 21s; gardeners and milkers (stations), 20s, 22s 6d, 255 ; hotel grooms and porters. 15s, 17s 6d ; shepherds. £60, £65 ; female cooks, 20s ; housekeepers. 15s, 17s 6d.
