SUGGESTED MILKING COMPETITIONS.

CHRISTCHURCH, May 4. In an interview, Dr Levinge, until recently superintendent of Sunnyside Asylum, endorses the suggestion of Mr W. Lowrie, director of Lincoln College, that a milking 1 competition should be conducted. As showing what could be done by careful culling and breeding, he. stated that the dairy herd at Sunnysicle, in connection with which an experiment of a similar character to that suggested by Mr Lowrie had been carried j out, and averaged a yield of fully 750 to 850 gallons, despite the fact that the herd included a large proportion of two-year-oM heifers. He was of opinion that the average yield of dairy cows in New Zealand was probably about 500 gallons per annum. He considered Lincoln College to be admirably adapted to carry out such an experiment; but it should not be restricted to the college, and experiments shoxild be conducted on the Government experimental iarms, as tho experiments would" b© more valuable jf they were carried out in different parts of the colony. Ho was of opinion that it would be a very good thing if instructors travelled from farm to farm, weighing and carefully testing the milk from individual cows. Farmers, when shown by actual demonstration the loss they were suffering through keeping inferior cows, would be more impressed than by reading any number of reports in regard {© com- ' petitions.
