SALE OF SURPLUS STOCK AT CHESTERMAINS, MATAKANUI.
Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report having held on Thursday last, the 27th April, at Ohestermains, Matakanui, a sale of surplus Clydesdale horses, cattle, and sheep on account of Mr Benjamin Naylor and others. Since Mr Naylor' s reputation as a breeder of first-class Clydesdale stock is held in very high esteem throughout the country, it is not surprising that his sale attracted a large concourse of buyers from far and near, and that an extremely satisfactory sale resulted. The draught horses offered were all well-bred sorts, by such favourably-known sires as Pride of Elderslie, Holmes's Crown Prince, Early Morning, Lord Salisbury, Sir Robert Stout, Naylor's Tasman, Taieri Tom, and Herd Laddie (Blakie's), and their breeding and condition left nothing to be desired. The condition and get-up of the stock generally reflected very great credit on Mr Naylor's farm manager (Mr John Finlay). Yearlings
were sold at £20 10s, two-year-old colts at up to £30 10s, three-year-old colts at up to £40 10s, and older mares at up to £58. Mr Naylor did not offer for sale any of his young fillies, of which he has a good number of really high-class animals reserved for stud' purposes. Eighteen-months-old shorthorn steers brought £4 do heifers £3 6s, dairy cows and heifers to £4 7s 6d. There was a good number of outside entries offered -when Mr Naylor's stock was disposed of, and a- good proportion of these was sold. A draught gelding, six years, realised £49 ; draught mare, five years (by Naylor's Tasman), £43; light spring-cart mare, three j'ears, £25 10s; aged hack, £14. Halfbred lambs brought up to 12s 4d, aged merino ewes 9s Id, three-year-old steers £5 10s. three-year-old heifers £4 10s, and aged cows £2 11s.
