Notes from Greymouth.

CFa.Oll Ova Own Cokhjgsfokdkxt.)

GREYMOUTH, April 20.

The return from the Moonlight dredge last week was 7oz ldwt, the ground being more than usually rough.

The Stafford-Waimea dredge is shortly to again make a start imder new management.

The Aldinga dredge has been taken over on tribute by the dredgemaster and crew for a period of six months.

The Greenstone Junction return was lloz 7dwt for a broken week.

The Greenstone Creek is on very good gold, but the exact return is not made public. The Ross Shellback dredge, which only started on Monday, is not fated to be exempt from accident. In a few hours, while all seemed to be working smoothly in easy ground, the flywheel suddenly collapsed, flying into fragments, without any apparent cause.

A miner who has just returned from the Wilberforce Reefs states that the approach is difficult. After getting well into the Lake Country one has to walk for several miles up a difficult hill and then climb about 1800 ft up a rugged mountain, cutting one's way through the snow, upon which lumps of white quartz were lying about. At the reef, stone with gold visible was seen. He said: — "The reef on the outcrop measured 19ft across, and in the tunnel was fully 15ft long, and was the whole width and length of the tunnel for that distance. After leaving the tunnel we got some dirt and rock off the side of the hill above the tunnel and washed it dn a shovel, and got what a miner would call a 2dwt to the load prospect. Proceeding down again, I picked wp a piece of stone in the creek, which I still have, and find that it carries gold freely to the naked eye. When we got to camp we washed the hatful of dirt and got good prospects, also getting small pieces of quartz carrying gold in what we put through the dish. I have no hesitation in saying, as a disinterested visitor, that in my opinion there is a great future for these reefs, and they will be the making of Hokitika and surrounding districts.'"'
