THE AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.

The axemen's fomth annual Easter carnival commenced hero to-day, and will be continued on Monday. The weather was cold and threatening, but only one slight shower fell. The attendance of the public was only fair. The entries received for the meeting constituted an easy record. The competition was good, while in some classes the finishes weie exciting. In the final of the Three-mile Bicycle Hace, in which there were six competitors, Dowling's wheel touched another rider's, with the result that four of the riders were brought clown, and A. Brighton got a nasty fall, and had to be removed to the hospital. On inquiry there it was asceitained that he li<ul re-
ceived considciable biuising about the head, the iace being sciaped and the lips and mouth cut. He is in a, dazed condition. The other riders escaped with skin bruises. J. Summers, v ho was cue of those brought down, remounted pnd rode into third place, receiving a hearty clap oi encouragement from the ■spectators. April 24. The seoond day of the Axemen's Carnival was held to-day, when the weather was atrocious, and the attendance of the publio consequently small. Frank Forde attempted to break the world's record far throwing the hammer (recently established by himself), of 125 ft 2in, and succeeded in throwing it 127 ft 4in, thus breaking his previous record by 2ft 2in. Carson and Macintosh also attempted to lower the world's record of 30 3-ssec for 2ft red pine (established by themselves last year), and succeeded in doing it in 29 l-ssec. A. ladles' bicycle race was on the programme. Five entered, but only two faced the starter; and both gave a good exhibition, the publio heartily applauding their efforts to scorch. All the events were well contested, and the committee succeded well in its efforts to get them off to time. Following are the results : — Backhand Chop (12in logs). — H. Gallagher 2, F. Andrews 2, R. Perrin 3. Time, lmin 55sec. Half-mi.c Cycle Race, in four heats. — Final : J. Dowling 1, M. Summers 2, G. Jack 3. A good race. Dowling winning by half a wheel. Time, lmin 7Ssec. Standing Chop.— Final : R. W. Field 1, J. Hartnett 2, S. Johnston 3. Won with a little to spare. Time, 2min 55sec. 100 Yards Amateur Race, in five heats. — M. Mitchell 1, J. S. Corbett 2, R. Wade 3. Won by 2ft. Time, 10 3-ssec. Handicap Single-handed Sawing. — J. Hartnett (15sec) 1, E. Mears (lOsec) 2. S. Fisher (Bsec) 3. Won somewhat easily. Time, lmin 23sec. Sleeper-squaring. — Murdoch 1, E. Half-mile Handicap. — F. A. Henry (40yds) 1 T. Menses (20yds) 2, W. Mason (40yds) 3. The best finish of the day, being just won ca the tape by inches. Time. 2inin 7Jsec.
Handicap Sawing. — Final : Carson and Macintosh (set) 1. Chisholm brothers (2sec) and Hogan brothers (2sec) tied for second place. A splendid go. Won by a stroke only. Time, 23sec.
One-mile Wheel Eace, in four heats. — Final: J. W. Shanks 1. G. Jack 2, W. Baldwin 3. Won by a length.
3STew Zealand Champion Standing Chot). — Gr. A. Gould 1, J. J. M'Cann 2, H. Mitchell 3. Won nicely. Time, 2inin 21 l-ssec.
New Zealand Champion Double-handed Sawina (2ftV — Chisholni brothers 1. Carson and M'lntosh 2, Hogan brothers 3. Cbisholm brothers won by 2 2-ssec, and, notwithstanding that they had a good log, put up a fine performance. Time. 2min 8 2-ssec.
Ladies' Cycle Race. Half a mile. — Miss Adanison 1. Miss P. FoJley 2. These were the only cornoetitors. Both rode a good race. "Won by a wheel.
Isew Zealand Chamnion Chop (2ft logs). — A. Millwood 1. J. M'Cann 2, P. Baird 3. The winner put up a good performance, and was all out at the finish ; only a few biowa between the next men. Tame, 53sse.
Two-mile "Wheel Race, in four heats. — - Final- a. Jack (200 yds) 1. W. B. Harlow (220 yds) 2, M. Dowling (180 yds) 3. The scratch man gave in after sroing half-way, as the r>ace was too hot, and Jack won by two or three lengths. Time, sinin 7 1-osec.
Handicap S a wing-down (2ft logs) ; chou 6in, «w the rest. — Baircl brothers 1, Carson and Macintosh 1, M'Cann and Campbell 3.
Boys' Chainpionshdp 100 Yards, in three heats. — Final: A. Thompson 1, N. Aldred 2, H. "Walker 3. The winner runs well, and won. by 3ft. Time, ll^ec.
One-mile Relay Eace. — High School team 1. Civil Service (Dunedin) 2. A protest entered against the winners through running a -wrong man lias not yet been decided. Tttne. Sniin 57sec. '
