LA WRENCE
Apnl 12. — Great satisfaction is felt here at the splendid results achieved by the visit of the Dunedin deputation to Roxburgh re railway extension from Lawrence; more especially are the thanks of this community due to Mr \f. Cohen, whose able championship cornpletjiy routed the Southland forces and reduced their a»£unieiits to a farcical comedy. There io a better feeling growing amongst our local tradesmen with regard to future prospec'.s. The probability of a vote being placed on iho Estimates during the coming session for railway extension, the certainty of a creamery beuig started m the district, and an all-rouml determination amongst business men to develop our natural resources, together with tt.a increase in population through the settlement of Greenfield, and the probability of further land being acquired and thrown open, have all tended to increase satisfaction with our prospects in the near future.
The weather recently has rather hindered those farmers who have not yet got all their crop in stack; but the rain has been welcomed by the mining community, who have been rather short of water lately for hydraulic sluicing.
Our next little excitement will be the election of Mayor and councillors, and there seems as if there would be healthy competition for the positions.
For some time back our expenditure on roads and streets has been unusually heavy, but it has now been decided to adopt a reduced rate of speed, otherwise an increased rate will probably be needed.
